Today Cambridge Community Kitchen gave away soup on New Square. While I sketched them I listened to how people responded to Free Soup. CCK were offering it “no strings attached”. To allow themselves to take it, passers by had to recognise their hunger, and be willing to receive a gift.
In Braiding Sweetgrass, Robin Wall Kimmerer says “A gift creates ongoing relationship” — gratitude, a sense of responsibility. Having eaten CCK’s delicious Free Soup we have participated in a non-capitalist exchange.
Thanks Peter Corbett for this lovely photo of the day.
